🔧 Why Professional Handset Servicing Is Essential

To ensure maximum performance, regulatory compliance, and a long lifespan for your radio equipment, periodic servicing is not just recommended—it's vital. A professional service maintains your investment and keeps you communicating effectively.

📡 The Critical Issue: Frequency Drift

One of the most frequent problems I find in unserviced radios is frequency drift.

Your radio's programmed channels are kept accurate by a reference crystal in a Phase-Locked Loop (PLL). However, as the radio ages, this crystal can naturally drift off its original frequency.

  • The Problem: A channel programmed to transmit on 160.000 MHZ might end up broadcasting on 159.976 MHZ or even further off. I commonly see older radios off by 1.2 KHZ or more.

  • The Impact: Even a small shift dramatically degrades your operating distance. Your radio will be less effective at transmitting and receiving, severely limiting its range and clarity.

  • Our Solution: During service, I check and adjust the reference crystal and Deviation Levels to ensure your radio is transmitting exactly where it should be, restoring your maximum operational range.

💧 Protection Against Corrosion and Damage

When I disassemble a radio for service, I often find signs of liquid ingress (moisture) or heavy dust buildup.

  • Liquid Ingress: If left unattended, moisture causes corrosion, which is the ultimate destroyer of radio electronics. I treat any signs of ingress with a special aerosol to neutralize damage and protect the internal components.

  • Dust & Wear: Dust can hinder components, and repeated use can cause solder joints to fail.

Comprehensive Servicing Includes:

  • Liquid Ingress treatment.

  • Dust cleaning from all internal components.

  • Re-soldering of common failure points.

  • Cleaning of controls (pots, switches, buttons).

  • Cleaning of speaker cones and meshes.

  • Thorough external cleaning and inspection.

🗓️ Service Recommendation

I recommend having your equipment serviced at least every 18 months. If your radios operate in a harsh, dusty, or high-moisture environment, I  advise a shorter service interval.
